15 December 2005 (Thursday) – Germany Munich – Munich walking tour, night market
Today is my last day in Munich and I have been to most of the places I wanted to go and so took it really R&R today.
I first went for breakfast at Mc Donald’s and was having some problems looking for the cutlery to eat my Big Breakfast and the sugar for my coffee. There was this man who was sitting beside me and seeing my problem, he went to the counter and helped me to get the stuffs I need. I saw that he also took some jam for the muffins but then he didn’t give it to me and pocketed it himself instead!
Later on, I even saw him going to the tray disposal section to pick on leftover food by others! As in all ‘ang mo’ countries, you have to dispose of the stuffs yourself but in Germany, there’s no bin for you to throw away your rubbish but instead there’s a tray collection counter and you just put your tray there, together with the food etc. So, whenever someone puts his/her tray in that counter, the man will walk over and pick up whatever is left and is usually fries and drinks.
And he doesn’t look like he has no money to buy food. In fact, I thought he looked like a teacher cos he took out a thick stack of A4 paper and it seems to be that he is marking some assignment of his students!
After breakfast, I went to join the free walking tour as recommended by the Australian gal I met in Nuremberg. It is indeed very interesting and went to most of the places I wanted to go but haven’t been yet, cos I didn’t manage to find it the other day. And a few of the places that I have been to before, I went again but this time I learned about the history and facts of those places.
The walking tour ended at around 3pm and we all gave some tips to the guide. There were a few couples in the group and they all gave very generously. I was running out of cash already and so only gave €2 as tips.
I then went to take a walk around again and went for some shopping. In the tour, I overheard some of the people talking about a big night market at some park which is also where every year’s Oktoberfest is being held. After some shopping, I went back to the hostel to take a rest and pack my stuffs. There was a new gal staying in the room and she is also an Australian and we chatted for quite awhile before I went out again to the night market and also to go grab my dinner.
It is indeed a very big night market but I don’t see much of a Christmas atmosphere there as compared to the Christmas Markets at Nuremberg or Stuttgart. There are quite a few tents erected for different themes, food, stalls etc…and there’s also an outdoor area. After walking for awhile, I sorta got lost in the market! I can’t imagine the place being crowded with people during the Oktoberfest and its such a big place!
Even though I have not much cash left, I couldn’t resist buying another of those games (will post pic of it later). I also bought one in Barcelona the other time.
After walking around for awhile, I got tired and went back to the hostel to rest. It’s a pretty boring day today.
